Dear SquareCard Member, loyal customer, and visitor:

For the last three years I, and everyone on the SquareSpot team, have been on an adventure of a lifetime building our company and our brand. We have invested blood, sweat and tears to make this happen. So, it’s with great sadness that I am writing to you to tell you that Square, Inc. has threatened legal action unless we change our name and our logo. While we do not believe we have any conflict or that you will confuse us with a credit card processing company- they apparently do.

 

While we have tried to settle this matter to no avail, we are now faced with a possibly very long legal battle that could cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. As we are just a small start-up and they are a huge company, and while I believe this to be very wrong, we simply cannot afford to fight them. After having spent three years building the brand, it will also be very expensive to re-brand.

 

Therefore, it is with a very heavy heart that we are going to have to give in to Square’s demand that we do not use the word “Square” or the image of a square. This means that I will have to shut down the business until we can either raise the money to fight this battle or re-brand. We also will be taking down the website. Either way, it’s going to take time. It may be that we end up selling the company.

 

I would like you to know that I started this company right after having had my twin daughters. I thought that developing a Loyalty Card for moms like myself who liked the idea of getting a discount at top small businesses in return for my loyalty to them was a great idea. I still do. I am proud of every single business we have partnered with and hope you have been introduced to some new businesses that have made your life a little easier or maybe a little more fun.  

 

Your card will no longer be valid as of October 31st and if you paid for your card, please do email me for a full refund.

 

I will keep you updated if I can manage to salvage this. In the meantime, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to have you as a member.
